Nith River Bridge

The Nith River bridge or Nithvale bridge is a historic bridge located in Ayr, Ontario. There is a very overgrown blocked off road leading down to the bridge, and there is a path continuing on the other side that eventually leads to active private property.

The bridge is a pin connected truss bridge built in 1883, with a single approach span added in 1914 by the Hamilton Bridge Company. It has been closed to both traffic and pedestrians for a number of years.

The overall journey on and around this bridge poses multiple risks. First of all, there are plants all around the bridge's sides that make it hard to get through in many places. I didn't come into contact with anything like poison ivy but it is likely there somewhere. Due to being in a pretty dense forest there are also a lot of bugs, including but not limited to: ants, concrete mites, ticks and bees. The bridge itself is blocked off for a reason, as the overall structure of the bridge faces deterioration, along with immense rotting of the wood. Certain spots are sketchy to step and I'd advise watching where you are stepping and staying within arms reach of the railings on either side. The rusting bridge also leaves many instances of sharp metal exposed. You can pretty easily get under the South side of the bridge by taking a path directly to your left after hopping the blocking fence, but the North side does not have this. I had to climb down the conrete wall and swing under the bridge, which was very dangerous and not something I'd recommend doing.
