Fort Mckavett has several toxic permanent chemicals generated from guns and explosives that are hazardous to health. The water around the fort is not safe either as it has dissolved toxic chemicals from the fort.
Located in Menard County Texas, Fort Mckavett is a former US army installation built to protect the frontier and migrants traveling to California. Fort Mckavett operated for only 7 years before it was closed down in1859. Currently a national historic site, concrete ruins are what remains of the Fort Mckavett.
Fort Mckavett was established in 1853 by the US army. It was a temporary base in the rural parts of Texas and so most of the structures were made of wood. The fort which was named after an infantry officer, had five barracks, a hospital, and several kitchens. The fort being in a remote region, rarely participated in any active war or operation. Fort Mckavett closed shortly afterward when its presence was deemed unnecessary.
During the early days of the civil war, all troops in Texas were ordered out of the state leaving Fort Mckavett empty. The confederate army with the intention of seceding from the USA occupied the fort for 2 years but still with all that fortification they were unable to defend the Texas frontier. In November of 1863, the confederate army finally deserted the fort and marched east to fight the USA.
In 1865, the civil war was over after the resistance (confederate) army surrendered. This allowed for troops to go back to Texas as they were ordered to occupy the pre-war forts. Later more infantry troops were sent to Fort Mckavett and they had to sleep in temporary tents and structures due to Fort Mckavett's deteriorated state. After the Red River war which seemed to be the only threat at the time, troops helped in the rebuilding of Fort Mckavett permanent structures.
After the red river war, the Mckavett garrison participated in several minor conflicts. By 1878, Fort Mckavett had no importance since all the resistance forces were defeated. The army made a decision to close the fort and in 1883, it was closed and deserted. Civilians occupied Fort Mckavett and turned it into residential and business premises. A small community town called Fort Mckavett was established from the fort but later declined when they also abandoned the fort.
Fort Mckavett was bought by Texas park and wildlife who restored a dozen-plus buildings and established Fort Mckavett state historic site. The fort is currently a renowned historic park under the management of the Texas historical commission. It is open to the public to visit and have a brief glimpse of history.
