As the name suggests, Stewart’s mansion was named after its last known owner who lived and died in the mansion. Stewart’s mansion which was formerly known as Mansion Isla Ranch was built in1926 by George Sealy (a famous businessman). The building later changed hands and names until it was abandoned in the mid-1900.
The final touches and finishings of the building were done in 1930 by its owner George Sealy. Only 3 years after its completion, George sold the land plus the mansion to Stewart Maco. Stewart expanded the compound, did some minor changes, and changed it to its current name. Stewart’s mansion property was donated to the state of Texas but not the mansion on the property. Due to this, the mansion was left unattended and maintained when Maco Stewart’s family all died.
Stewart’s mansion sits on a land that was a former camp for a cannibalistic community. With several rituals that they carried out like killing people, the land can as well be haunted. Visitors at the mansion have reported hearing screams of people, piano playing, and the laughter of children playing. Karankawa tribe community who resided the property, where the mansion was constructed engaged in various bloodshed battles that are believed to haunt the place to this day. Screams of injured warriors and shadowy figures are common in the property as most visitors’ state.
The mansion is currently under construction hence it is hazardous for visitors or onlookers to be at the premises. The safety of both the construction workers and visitors is not guaranteed in case of an accident. Conversely, machines used at the site are extremely dangerous and may cause harm. In 1968. Two investors purchased the land to renovate it and turn it into a resort. They were unable and sold the property to Stonehenge Real Estate Investment Company. The company has started the restoration of the mansion into a world-class resort at Galveston Island. Major sections of the mansion have been renovated to an unrecognizable state. A state-of-the-art pool has also been included in the current renovated property.
Stewart mansion is still closed and not open to the general public for tours or reservations. Being at its final stages of the restoration process, having visitors at the site would slow down the process and at the same time may cause accidents that could otherwise have been avoided. Management of the restoration process says the resort will be open for business sooner than it was intended.
