Once the most beautiful stage is today one of the most secret abandoned places in Massachusetts. Steinert Hall is located at 162 Boylston Street, in Boston, Massachusetts. This is an old piano hall and music studio in Massachusetts. Once a famous piano hall is now dwelling with time, this is one of the most well-guarded secret places in Boston.

The Background of Steinert Hall

Boston had reached in the culture one of its popular sides was it famous for piano manufacturing. At that time a German immigrant came from Bavaria and lived with his family in Boston. The immigrant was piano dealer M.Steinert & sons. They built the Steinert hall in 1896. They moved their old piano store to Boston. This six-story building was designed by Winslow and Wetherall. The whole place was 40 feet under the main street. People first need to enter the piano shop and through the shop, they need to cross four flights of stairs and then they get into Steinert Hall.

The interior of the building was designed in Adam's style, with fluted Corinthian pilasters separating round arches. By 1911 many considered Steinert Hall "the headquarters of the musical and artistic world of cultural Boston". In 1896 the ornate concert hall was originally opened. The space was mainly built to show off the floor piano store wares.

Some of the famous musicians who performed here were Josef Hoffman, Harold Bauer, Fritz Kreisler, etc.

Closing of Steinert Hall

In 1942 the Steinert Hall was closed due to restrictive new fire codes. When one of the most popular dance clubs in the city named the Cocoanut Grove nightclub caught fire one night more than 500 people died and hundreds were injured. The government then took the case into their hands and ordered tightened building codes. After that only multi exit venues were in service and others were closed down. And the Steinert hall failed to match with the codes. 

The owners tried to find out if any how to reopen the hall but they needed to build multiple exits in a four stories underground building was impossible at that time so the Steinert hall was isolated for the rest. As time passed people of Boston forgot about this once-famous hall and it was abandoned from humans forever. By these years this old hall was only used as a storage room for the above piano store.

Today's situation of Steinert Hall

The old famous Steinert Hall is now mostly damaged due to no maintenance and has disconnected from human touch since after closing. Most of its seating arrangements were donated to a nearby school auditorium. In 2015 there was an announcement about redeveloping the hall for use again but nothing changes in reality. Now it is mostly used as storage and for the busy people of Boston who hurry along above ground.
