Linn Park is a state park that consists of diverse topography, hardwood, and evergreen forests. It is located in Cook Ligonier Township of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The park covers almost 612 acres of land. In between the native mountains and surrounded by two small streams, this is a famous natural park in Pennsylvania. 

The History of Linn Run State Park

Before a decade this place was generally called a  "wasteland". The area of Linn State Park is now the second second-growth forest in Pennsylvania. During the lumber era in the mid 19th century to the start of the 20th century, most of the forests were cut down and most of the mountains and forests were cleared. The maximum of the forest was destroyed by the lumbermen. The lumber used the small logs for coal mines of southwestern Pennsylvania and West Virginia.  And the hemlock tree of the forests was used to make tannins, for the nearer tanneries of the area. By the time a wildfire took place, 60% of the reserve forest was burned since lumbering was done. The lumberman only left behind one thing that was treetops. Which were left to dry.

Restoration of Linn Run State Park

 The edges of the Allegheny mountains had once been covered with old-growth forest. 

Linn Park is in the heart of the Laurel mountains. In 1909 when Commonwealth acquired the land, it was one of the first major public properties to be purchased. The very next year the newly formed Pennsylvania Game Commission along with the Department of Forestry to restock deer in this land. White-tailed deer were imported from Michigan and New York. Later in the year 1963, General Mellon leased the land and completed all the improvements. And in 1963 Mellon gave the property to the Commonwealth.

Recent Status of the Linn Run State Park

Today Linn Run State Park is open for hiking, trails, picnicking, and cabin rentals. Nine rustic cabins are given on rentals throughout the year. You can visit some famous trails of the park which are- Adams Fall trail, Iscrupe Trail, Flat rock trail, Grove run trail. Hunting and fishing are permitted in the parking area. But the hunting range is 400 acres of the park and hunting groundhogs is prohibited in the park. The popular picnic spots here are Adams Falls picnic area, which is near Adam falls and the other is Grove run picnic area near Grove run. The picnic areas included modern restrooms, picnic tables, and a Pavillion.The cabins of this State park were enlisted on the National Register of Historic Places. As the older cabins were constructed during the great depression, which is mainly an architectural style also known as WPA Rustic. One out of nine cabins has all modern facilities and includes modern baths; others are rustic and old. But every cabin has its outhouse and water pump.
