Swan's Island is a beautiful, elegant abandoned isle located in Hancock County, Maine, and six miles southwest of Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. The island is named after Colonel James Swan of Fife, Scotland, who colonized the island and its surroundings in the late eighteenth century. The only access to Swan's Island is by using the ferry from Bass harbor. The main business of this island is lobster fishing. Once a popular colony is a today mostly abandoned and only used as tourist spots.

History of Swan's Island 

Swan's Island was first found in 1606 by Samuel de Champlain's expedition. It covers around 7000 acres of the classic coastal area. There are three villages on Swan's island these are- Swan's Island, Atlantic, and Minturn. At that time the inhabitants of the island were Indians. They used it for seasonal hunting grounds. In 1776, a member of the Sons of Liberty and Boston tea party participant, James Swan purchased this island.  After 5 years of island purchase, the first settler of the island was an American Revolutionary War veteran David Smith. After that, the population of the island gradually increased. Fish processing was the main business for a living here. Other attractions of the island are fine sand beach, lobster and marine museum, Millpond Park, Swan's Island Library, Tims Island market, and takeout.

Abandonment of Swan's Island 

During the 1930s when it became no longer a profitable area its population gradually decreased. And today there are hardly 350 residents found on the whole island. Most of the island was isolated. In the later years of 1960, this island was mainly used as a seasonal tourist spot by the state. The ferries were used to take and drop for the tourist who visits here on the weekends.

Recent status of Swan's Island 

Today Swan Island is one of the main tourist attractions of Maine. It is more popular in the summertime. Many visitors visit this island for its natural beauty. One of the tourist agencies that started the trial, describes the beauty and attractions of the island. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Some of the attractions of the island are nesting bald eagles, waterfowl, deers, hiking, and hiking. Apart from that, there is also  Swan's island lobster and marine museum, Burnt Coat harbor lighthouse, which is open years around, Swan's island library, etc. These are the main local attractions of this island. Tourists can enjoy the island through biking, hiking, or kayaking.
