Hazards of Blue Hawk Mine

  • Shin high water at the entrance, people have put logs and boards down to try to create walkways/bridges but I'd advise rain boots

  • Cave is only about 300m long but still be cautious of oxygen levels/possible animals

History of Blue Hawk Mine

The Blue Hawk mine began operation in 1934, but only produced ore for a single year before being almost completely abandoned ever since. After its initial production of gold, ownership of the site was essentially given up and remains in limbo to this day. Additional drilling and limited expansion continued through the 80s but it never went back into production, and was simply left empty.

The mineral deposits and old rail system were very interesting to see! You will definitely need flashlights as there is no sunlight besides the main entrance which you cannot see from the end of the mine.

It is possible for a 4x4 vehicle/atv to make it to the mine entrance but if you're into walking/hiking, the trail is 4.6km to mine entrance (from main road) and 140m of elevation.

We were able to drive down in a lifted 4x4 pickup with no issues besides making some wrong turns. The area is used by ATVs so there is a lot of different trails/roads that I suggest finding a drawn out map off google to help you find it!
