Hazards of Onslow Speedway 1/4 mile of high octane terror

Parking is very tight but not likely to be watched, it is afterall just an abandoned oval. But the whole time I was here I was keeping an eye out for bears, I have no idea why, there were no signs of bears, but for whatever reason I made sure to have my bear spray on my camera bag. Normally when I get a feeling that something is off or not right, I either leave or try to reduce the risk as best as I can. Bear spray and talking out loud as I walk through the bush to the oval helps.

History of Onslow Speedway 1/4 mile of high octane terror

I did not realize this until I sat down to write this report but there is a surprisingly large amount of history tied in to Nova Scotia Stock Racing, for a track that was effectively closed in 1994 there are videos and stills all over facebook and a handful of websites dedicated to preserving the history.

Here is what I found: Started operating in the mid-1950’s to 1991-1994, at some point the stands were removed along with most other buildings. I will include a link to the source for the information.

Run by John Henderson from 1976-79

Sold to Russell White in 1980

Frank Fraser became the promoter in 1980

Gayle Crooks became promoter in 1981

Lights were installed for the 1981 season and racing switched to Sunday night from Sunday afternoon

Stoneham Enterprises Limited took over management in 1982

Peter Johnstone and Ken Packham became the promoters in 1982

Bruce Cumberland became the promoter in 1984

Robert Mosher was the owner / promoter from 1986-89

Larry Dickie became the Track Manager in 1986

The backstretch was widened in 1986

Only ran specials in 1991

After 1991 the track was used occasionally used for Monster Trucks and ATV racing

Run by Gord and Linda Ann Ewing in 1993-94

It’s a paved oval in the woods, walked around a bit, you don’t really notice how sloped the track is until you're on it, wish I spent more time here. There are two small buildings along the road that you walk up to get to the oval, but the bush was too deep to see through to make out their condition. I think they are really just half collapsed sheds. This would be something awesome to shoot with a drone.
