Devil’s Slide was the site of a World War II military observation and triangulation station, called Devil’s Bunker, which helped defend San Francisco Harbor. Before radar, soldiers used binoculars and compasses to spot ships and report their positions. By combining reports from several observation points, they could figure out a ship’s exact location through triangulation.
The site had six main structures: three concrete-and-steel pillboxes for observation, two concrete-and-earth bunkers, and a reinforced steel tower. One of the bunkers was used for communications and as a command post. After missile defenses made the station obsolete, it was abandoned.
The southernmost bunker was sold to a private owner in 1983. Parts of the structure are still visible, sitting on the peak, and the site is now fenced off.
