Also known as the 'Street-Barnes Family Cemetery' Has sat abandoned since the 1950's the property originally belonged to Stepney Street who was one of the first Black settlers who came to Canfield, ON through the underground railroad. This cemetery if very historically siginificant for both Black History and Haldimand countiy's past. The first burial was September 10th 1846 and the final burial was February 11 1943. Several remaining ancestors worked very hard to give this cemetery the recognition it deserves, I believe this took nearly 20 years (if not longer) for it to become a designated historical landmark. At the beginning, the cemetery was then located on private property and the land owner wasn't happy about anyone venturing into the old cemetery. I had driven by this little clump of trees for years and never knew there was a cemetery back there. I visited in April of 2025 and it appears that they had begun to clean things up a bit, I've heard that it now has a pathway all the way back to the cemetery and is easily accessible now and open to the public I believe. I don't usually post cemeteries, but this one stuck with me and it's definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
