Hazards of Goldenville mine site

There were some wicked chemicals used to pull gold out of rocks, and this place is full of them, lead, mercury, arsenic, and sweet delicious sulfide concentrates. You can easily see that very little is growing in the area that is the most contaminated.

Imperia I would strongly recommend against eating the dirt, but you do you.

History of Goldenville mine site

Oh boy, I actually have history on this site, gather round and listen to a tale. The almost ghost town of Goldenville, which grew up around the gold mines, started in the 1860’s when a local farmer Nelson Nickerson found a rock, a rock with gold inside. From that rock a rush, a gold rush began to secure land, prospectors, geologists, mining corporations began showing interest in the area, soon the government arrived with a survey team to control land ownership. The population grew to over 3,000 with all the business that a small town would require being built almost overnight. This continued until 1942 with a few slow periods mixed in when the value of gold dropped, the first war pulling miners to the front. During the 80 years of activity more than 210,000 ounces of gold was mined from approximately 270 shafts.

Welcome to the ruins of a gold mine site, there is a nice high point that gives you a great view of the site, only a few ruins remain of such a once active site. I drove up to the tailing pile, from there I walked around the remaining ruins and to the top of the largest pile to get my shots. There is not much here, but if you're interested in a historical site that was instrumental in shaping this part of Nova Scotia, and in the area then it’s worth the stop.
