About this location

The German Mill was built by George German in about 1860. They also built a second mill closer to what is now Hwy 24. The mill was owned by the Township of South Dumfries and sold in the early 80(a)s.

The mill is privately owned but accessible from the Grand River Valley Trail. There is a parking area on East River Road right at the "bump" sign, and a path takes you down to the rail trail owned by the GRCA.

Many stones have fallen and there is almost no plaster left.

The Mill is picturesque and offers a good view and access to the Grand River.

Milling around

When I showed up, a couple and a photographer were already here taking engagement photos (I think). Not the place I would expect most people would want to do that, but I can dig it. I took these while...

does this place need to be fm? It's probably the most public site on OAP.

this place is a bad spot for hunters because of the proximity of houses and a trail. I doubt there's hunting going because at the road there are about 8 houses, plus one at the river just west of the mill, and more houses and a camp ground to the east, and Glen Morris a kilometre away.

I think the hunters might be whoever has one of those houses down there between the mill and the boat launch. I've seen shells scattered along the shore in several places.

hunting is probably unlikely....probably fishing. there are trails running beside the river that are active and I doubt hunting is permitted.

I was out for a drive on Saturday & saw this from the road! I also saw what I thought were two hunters gearing up to head down that way.

I've used this site for a couple photo shoots. It is called German Mill. I think the owner now is a doctor. It was sold but the former North Dumfries in the early 80's for about $10,000 I believe, but recently has been sold.
