Ontario Abandoned Places will be rebranded as Ominous Abandoned Places

Subscription model??

I understand a site has to keep the lights on, but a monthly subscription based model is totally antithetical to urban exploration and a huge change for this website…

Thankfully I don't see an option to buy your way up the member levels, but I worry that this will be introduced someday?

My thoughts exactly, honestly the ‘subscription’ model is also just extremely confusing in general

So what happens to existing members?

all existing members are on the free tier. virtually most of the features which were previously available are still available for free tier members. the subscription users will be able to enjoy more convenience features.

I seem to have no access to who is invited to my private locations anymore. Is that part of the subscription now or a glitch?

that seems like a glitch. I will make note of this and have it fixed soon

we had a big community discussion around the topic on our discord. the site has been steadily burning through my pocket for 2 years since my take over. you can check the OAP financial details which were made public. my decision was to bring down the server if we are unable to get to financial sustainability by 2024. so we came up with the subscription idea as a community. as a one man dev team, i devoted a lot of my weekends over the last two years to service this urbex community. it would be very sad for me to bring the service down. but that doesn't mean we compromise our values. all necessary informational features is not and will not be paywalled. higher tiers have access to convenience features. and we are absolutely not implementing any pay-to-play scheme. if you want to support this community, please consider chipping in. 5 bucks a month is all it takes for each of our members to help out with the infrastructure part of this community.

Where can you find that?

I completely agree with kimchirichie. The perspective I used to justify the subscription is that it costs you 10 times more per month for gas or fares getting to these places, so putting some of that towards the community makes sense to me. What I think could improve is a long block of text somewhere explaining exactly what the subscription does for the user, what it does for the site, and why it's needed. But regardless of that I'll share my thoughts. As kimchirichie said, not having the subscription doesn't mean that you don't have access to the site, or are blocked off from some content. That is still all free. A level 2 member with no subscription has access to the exact same locations as a level 2 member with a premium subscription. Though I believe there will be a fee to level up being implimented in the near future, there will never be a part of the site where you can void the requirements and just buy your way up. Also, it's not like the money goes into someone's pocket. It immediately goes into the $27,000+ that has been spent on this site since kimchirichie has taken over, and only got about $1200 in revenue since he started, not including the new subscriptions. I'm not sure he'll ever get that 27,000 back but as long as the community is helping to make the $400 monthly fee not come out of his pocket, it’s okay. I think it’s completely reasonable, and maybe even owed to the server that we cough up $5 every month.

+1 to adding a note to the subscription page that explains why it's needed and where the money goes, hopefully that would avoid confusion like this in the future.
