Commencing operations in 1915, the Beachburg Subdivision was originally a part of the Canadian Northern Railway. In 1923, it became a part of the Canadian National Railway and was basically a shortcut to support transcontinental travel by bypassing busier routes to the south though Toronto and Arnprior. It was unique in that in meandered through Ontario and Quebec and back to Ontario over the Ottawa River and through what later became Algonquin Park. As with many rail routes, traffic declined and the "Beachburg Sub" was gradually closed in phases.
Rail traffic through the Park ended in 1995 and further closures moved eastward over time. There was some talk of incorporating remnants of the line into a regional transit system for the Ottawa region but some dork figured a $2.1B tunnel under downtown was a better idea. Lifting the rails for sale elsewhere started in 2014 and, as you can see, they are now gone. Once my knee recovers from a baseball injury, a journey to the more substantial bridge over the Ottawa River is in the offing.
