This pioneer cemetery is all that remains of the once thriving town of Summerville. Canada's first female doctor, Dr. Emily Howard Jennings Stowe 1831-1903 is buried here, not far from where she was born. She was refused enrollment in the Toronto School Of Medicine and the Victoria College in Cobourg ON ,just because she was a woman.?? She got her degree in the United States in 1867 and opened up a successful practice in Toronto, the same year. Her daughter, Augusta, was the first woman to earn a medical degree in Canada. Emily[suffragist] made great strides for woman and they got the right to vote in 1917, 14 years after her death. An elaborate headstone for A Captain Blewett by his wife, centre; A large log with an anchor below. Some headstones were weathered beyond reading. The centre of town was probably just south at the intersection.
