Opening in 1929 as Toronto East General Hospital, the building formerly known as the A & B wings was built in the 1940s in an art deco style. The hospital grew around it, adding new wings and introducing new technology until eventually the methods of treatment outgrew the building they were being performed in. In 2010, an application was put forwards to completely revamp the older portions of the campus to modernize and improve the quality of care the hospital could provide, which inevitably involved demolition of the older wings of the hospital.
The A & B wings remained in use until the construction of the modern building was finished and treatment could be moved over. As soon as that happened in 2023/24, the old building was slowly decommissioned and prepared for demolition. The building officially closed to the public in March of 2025, and interior demolition began. In September 2025, structural demolition commenced and by November, it was little more than a pile of rubble on the ground.
