Avantor Sciences

Avantor Sciences was founded by a chemistry student by the name of John Townsend Baker in 1904. Mr. Baker was frustrated that his lab was consistently yielding inaccurate results, and vowed to take the steps to make the purest chemicals possible so that others wouldn’t have the same issues that he had. Thus the J.T. Baker Chemical Company was formed. The company started out with a mere 20 employees in a small town in New Jersey. The brand grew in recognition after the success of “Baker Analyzed” products, which comprehensively and accurately listed the details of the trace impurities in each product. After J.T. Baker died in 1935, the company was purchased by the Vick Chemical Company. Vick Chemical diversified the scope of their products during WW2 due to necessity. New goods produced included penicillin, pesticides, and component chemicals used for ammunition and batteries.

In 2010, the J.T. Baker Chemical Company was sold once again, this time to New Mountain Capital LLC. New Mountain rebranded the company, naming it Avantor Sciences. In December 2023, the total number of employees working for Avantor reached 14,500, with the company being valued at $7.68 billion as of December 2025.

Over the last one hundred years, Avantor Sciences has become an industry lead in biopharma, healthcare, & laboratory solutions. They not only offer products such as chemicals and lab supplies, but also biopharmaceutical solutions, including gene therapies and vaccines. Avantor sells a much wider variety of products as well, as listed on their website.

This building appeared to be Avantor Science’s shipping and distribution building, with additional offices for logistics. The entire space has been meticulously emptied, with not a single thing left behind, which was a shame.
