Beautiful Spooky Le Grande Hermine and how she came to be

Originally built in Lauzon, Quebec in 1914, it was a St Lawrence River Ferry named "Le Progress" standing 140 feet tall. The ship is a replica of the ship made in the 1500s

In 1970,  it was given a makeover to resemble a 16th-century ship and was renamed "Le Grande Hermine" for an expo, there were.3 ships like this, that were used for exploration and research purposes in the 1500s.From Montreal, it moved several times, then was towed to Jordan harbor, where she has been since 1997 in 1991, a man purchased it and used it for Halloween party, or a casino, but ran into certain legal as well as financial problems. The owner died after

Fire accident on Le Grand Hermine that broke it down

Then, in 2003, a fire accident burned out the ship and the wood cladding, some sources say that few vandals dropped in and lit a fire, in hopes to keep themselves warmed, and caused such fire. The same winter, there were still pieces of burnt wood embedded in the ice when the winter came that year.

Broken, aged, but still an attraction

Since she has sat here and just continued to rust with algae growing on its surface. Some people apparently wanted to remove the ship, and sink it somewhere that can serve as an attraction for scuba diving, and others saying to restore it to its former "Pirate Ship" appearance, it was also used by a few students for fundraisers, where they turned the ship into a Halloween themed ship.

Update December 23rd 2021 - Today the three masts on La Grande Hermine were removed virtually destroying the roadside attraction. The drive to Niagara along the Qew will never be the same.

wouldve went down in the hull, but falling into the ice once was more than enough for one day. Despite the -20 - -40 weather, fellow user KnightHawk and myself managed to get out and find some great locations.

I remember an article in a local thorold paper about ten years ago that said this ship was hit by two bolts of lightning in one storm. Thats how the fire started.

Someone on youtube gets interiors, using an inflatable boat to go around the back for a POE,it's not my kind of explore but its definitely respectable, here's the link! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vdKRMuM1wg

I just did a photoshoot there, hehe. I always drove by the location and wanted to shoot there so I'm glad I finally did! The water is pretty dirty and deep, and while you can access it if you're stealthy, it caught fire a few years ago, so it's not as stable as it used to be.

best time to board it is in winter, when the ice is nice and thick. if you had a boat, i guess at any time.

How deep is the water there? I've actually considered boarding that ship for more pictures! I see it all the time and have been resisting the urge to go for too long!

Very cool Don. I have seen this every time I head down the QEW. Never knew the story behind it, I always thought it was some sort of advertising for a restaurant or motel or something.
