This jail was built in 1845 during the construction of the second Welland Canal. It is also only 12 feet by 20 feet. It's main purpose was for drunk and disorderly conduct, in the port area. People that were in there. Were only held for a short period of time. Which was often just overnight. It was one of the oldest ones in Ontario. But also one of the smallest. It was constructed by Alexander Muir. It has survived many changes to the area. It is also going to be moved to Lakeside Park as part of a development agreement from a settlement in April 2022 between the City of St. Catharines, the Port Dalhousie Conservancy, and the developer Rankin Construction. The agreement also aims to facilitate a new development called "The Locks" while preserving some more key heritage elements. The jail will also be restored. When it was built it had two jail cells with Fireplaces. After being a jail it was abandoned until it was used as a storage room for a bar called "The Jailhouse,". And now currently serves as storage for the park's beach concession.

is this one truly the smallest? Creemore, Ontario claims to have Canada's smallest jail. Was out there last year, pretty neat.
Awww! They got rid of the bar. This was a great place to stop for a summer drink.

Ha thanks for the addition..If you look under Kawartha Lakes you will find my write-up on "Canada's Smallest Jailhouse" and the smallest jails claims...However, the absolute distinction belongs to the jail house in Rodney, Ontario, which measures just 4.5 m by 5.4 m. The jails in Providence Bay, Port Dalhousie and Berens River are also smaller than Coboconk's and Creemore's.
