The Nurses Residence is officially known as the Long & Bisby Building, and is named after the land owners who donated their property on which it was built. This building is part of what were once several buildings collectively known as the Hamilton Mountain Sanitorium. The Sanitorium was constructed in 1906, but this particular building was built in 1920. The Sanitorium originally housed tuberculosis patients until 1961, when it then became the Chedoke General and Children's Hospital. In 1997 it became the Chedoke Hospital of Hamilton Health Sciences, but shut down some time after and became abandoned. Since then, the buildings sat empty and derelict until about 2013-14, when they were all torn down except for the Nurses Residence. This is the only building remaining from this part of Hamilton's history. There are hiking trails and several waterfalls in this area, and I have hiked around there many times, and always checked out the building. But I have never been inside until now, and I am thrilled to have been able to see the interior of this old, creepy, abandoned but historic place.
