Canamet Refinery

Canamet Resources purchased the former refinery site from a bankrupt company. At that time there was hydroxide sludge and spent catalyst being stored on the property.

In 2004 Canamet had agreed as part of the purchase to ship the toxic remains to China. There was concern that these toxins would enter into the ecosystem through rainwater and snow.

The Ministry of the Environment inspected the property and issued an order to clean it up. As of July 2009 it had still not been cleaned up and the company was fined.
