About this location

In 1898 The St. Catharine's Standard bought the three-storey Struthers Building which has had multiple additions over the years with the first one being in 1928–1929 which was a red-brick addition that housed the press room and printing department. In 1948–1949 The original 19th-century facade of the Queen Street building was modernized with a 20th-century facelift that included a new elevator. 1952–1953: An new building was added to the north of the 1929 press room to accommodate a large, new Goss printing press. It was also a major local event, as its transportation and installation was widely publicized. In 1973 they also purchased the adjacent Empire Building, a late 19th-century structure, and renovated it to match the modernized facade of the main building. In 1996 the company moved their printing and mailing operations to Hamilton and later in 2012 The large printing press that had been installed in the 1950s was removed by a crane which marked the end of an era for the property. Then in 2013 The St. Catharine's Standard moved out of the complex and into an new office at One St. Paul Street. The 1.7-acre property was sold to developer named Italo Ferrari. In 2012. The building complex sits on prime downtown real estate and an 31-storey tower was proposed. Unfortunately on December 5, 2025 the building was destroyed by a massive fire. An second fire later broke out again on December 26, 2025, a couple of hours after the fire at the adjacent La Scala Restaurant had been put out which was also owned by the same developer. City officials believe the fires involved a “combustible fuel source” but other then that the cause of the fires remains officially undetermined due to the severe structural damage preventing a safe investigation, fire officials have noted the suspicious nature of multiple fires at the building and also in the downtown area. Luckily some historic decorative signs and medallions were salvaged and returned to descendants of the original Burgoyne family, who owned the newspaper for over a century.

January 9, 2026

Went back to The Standard again. Unfortunately most of it is gone now. With only a small portion remaining. Only stayed for a small amount of time though as there were secuity guards chasing me out.

I would have taken more photos. But the rest of the buliding didn't seem that safe to go in. Maybe in a few weeks I could try again.
