Here, Standard Chemical built a plant. "They took advantage of the forest resources to manufacture charcoal, acetate of lime, wood alcohol and other byproducts in a process called the "Ditalitive Destruction of Wood". Wood was brought into the plant and the finished products were taken out along the Victoria Railway.
Just past where the tracks ran, on the left, is one of the original buildings. Across the road where it turns left one can still see the skeletal remains of the huge plant, which looks like above ground parking. It was closed and abandoned in 1946 after the building was stripped of all metal. The furnaces, retorts and other iron work were cut up and sold for scrap. The sidings that served the plant and flagstop station lasted well into the 1950s."
An internet friend of mine, Ben Carnochan, sent me a photo of the main plant. He is a professional photographer who runs a website dedicated to some of Haliburton's ghost settlements at http://www.carnochanphotography.com/2009/05/ghost-towns-of-haliburton-county-pt-2/
He too has visited Furnace Falls, Hadlington, Gelert, Irondale, Howland Junction and Kennaway.

Signs on the main building regarding fundraising for restoration of this unique structure.
Anyone who has ever driven to Camp Wanakita has more than likely driven by these ruins, unless there is another way in to the Camp that I'm not aware of! Beautiful location!

Yes it'll still be there. Two different buildings on either side of the road. No interior access to one of them. It's off Koshlong Lake Rd.
