Hazards
The property is double gated, the street where this is located has been gated off. As in Moxley rd cannot be accessed via Concession Rd 4 W and the stretch of road where this is an unused portion of Moxley. So approach via Highway 5 and drive up Moxley to the “dead end” fence then hop out and continue on foot. The second gate comes when you reach the actual property. A simple farm fence is not a problem the rest of the property is surrounded by a wooden fence as well. It is very overgrown and thus ticks are a big problem in the summer and long pants and spray is advised. Plants such as poison ivy, thorn bushes, and other sharp plants are dotted throughout the property so be careful where you step.
History
From the information I could find this property was most likely used by a local farmer for the storage of crops and machinery and the surrounding area was used for growing crops. This property was then incorporated into the greenbelt in 2005 and given all the respective protections that come with it. Based on google street view it was still being used for farming applications up until July 2012. Then around June 2014, the property was purchased by Lafarge the company that runs the nearby quarry, they bought the property as they were planning an expansion. They bought other properties along Moxley to also expand into, Lafarge put in a request to the city of Hamilton to rezone the land from agriculture to mineral extraction and to remove certain greenbelt protections from the land. They got their response on November 22 2017 when the city allowed many of Lafarge’s properties to be rezoned except for this property (580 Moxley Rd). Since it was unable to be rezoned the property sits unusable to Lafarge and thus the property and its holdings decay until they try to get the city to reconsider their choice. Buildings won’t be demolished and the lot won’t be cleaned up until that point as it will cost money for no end payoff. This bando will be around for a very long time.
About this location
Approached from Highway 5 and then drove up Moxley to what was a “dead end” actually was a gate that barred the rest of the road including access to this property. Parked the car hopped out and walked down the path to the property. Then made it to the gate and followed the very overgrown driveway. This driveway had power lines but they were cut indicating that this property is likely to be demolished soon. At the end of the driveway are three buildings of note and other items. There is a barn that is mostly empty except for the overabundance of wallpaper inside. There is the second barn with just trash and chairs within. Then there is a shack with a red door and a crystal doorknob which is quite overgrown and is collapsing in on itself. Throughout the property, there are also old trailers, an old car, old car parts, and what appears to be a giant old machine attached to the barn, which I have no idea what it does. Was probably an old hay storage area along with machinery storage for the farmer’s field nearby. Probably also functioned as a dumping ground too. Very stress-free bando due to seclusion, happy to see no tags or destruction and would like to keep it that way.

Lafarge has wiped out the whole area back there.
